Bikkel translates emotion into her work
Rubric Gorcums Museum
Fred Mertens

The Glass4ever exhibition can be seen in the Gorcums Museum. This exhibition of extremes shows how glass is applied in contemporary art. One of the participating artists is Bikkel who exhibits work that she made especially for this exhibition. Her source of inspiration was the murder of the Gorcum martyrs.

Bikkel was born on Curaçao and came to the Netherlands as a 17-year-old. When her first child was born, she wanted to paint his portrait with oil paint in order to keep it forever. Painting became her passion. She developed in such a way that she was asked to teach at a secondary school in Maassluis. First as a teacher, later as a teacher of the then new course CKV, Cultural Artistic Education, a broad cultural package. Bikkel thought it was a huge challenge. “I loved that they asked me to do this because it is a very broad subject that also includes music and theater”. Immediately after my appointment as a teacher I started studying at the Willem de Kooning Academy and what I learned there I could pass on to my students. I had a great time there. ”
In all the work of Bikkel her roots are present. In glass by processing chicken wire as a metaphor for her homesickness to Curaçao where she was born and (when she is in Curaçao) for her homesickness to the Netherlands where her children live.
Why did Bikkel start working with glass? ‘Of the four elements, water, earth, air and fire, water is most important to me. I was looking for a material with which I could best represent that and that is glass. It is transparent and I can work three-dimensionally with it. I went looking for a glass workshop and was allowed to work at the Van Tetterode Glass Studio in Amsterdam. Besides water that for me is the imagination of my birthplace, heim (home) and woe (pain) play a big part in my life. Together they form my world. The mesh that I use in my glassart or is part of my paintings is transparent. It is not a boundary, more a dividing line between my two worlds that are both great and that I love a lot. I try to translate my emotion into my work.’

When Bikkel was approached for the Glass4Ever exhibition, she immersed herself in the history of Gorcum. ‘I was raised as a Catholic and because of that I was very moved by the story of the Gorcum martyrs. Because I only want to show new work for an exhibition, I decided to make two installations as a metaphor for this historical event, where for me the suffering of the martyrs symbolizes hope as part of the feeling of faith, hope and love . ”
The first installation can be seen in this exhibition in Gorkum. The second will soon be exhibited at the Pilgrimage Church H.H. Martyrs of Gorcum in Brielle. Information about Bikkel’s work can be found at www.bikkelartist.com.

Mother Earth

Mother Earth

Earth and light and wind and water,

together giving life so bright.

Earth grows firm from roots deep under,

up to the sun high in its light.

Surrounded by broad blue seas waving,

being foundation for rain from above,

giving seafood and serving boat travels,

together a base for life and love.

But sometimes the earth shows very cruel,

when she suddenly starts shaking bad.

She then causes much and awful sorrow,

while safety, dreams and lives are wrecked.

Therefore let’s pray for return of these three:

peace, safe shelter and recovery!
